About Humayun's Tomb

Built in 1570 by Empress Bega Begum for her husband Emperor Humayun, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent and the architectural precursor to the Taj Mahal. The tomb sits at the center of a formal Mughal charbagh garden divided into four quadrants by water channels, representing the four rivers of Paradise described in the Quran. The red sandstone and white marble structure houses the graves of several Mughal emperors and is surrounded by other historically significant tombs including Isa Khan's tomb and Bu Halima's garden. Recently restored through a meticulous conservation project by the Aga Khan Trust, the monument and its gardens have been returned to their original splendor, making it one of Delhi's most photogenic heritage sites.
