About India Gate

India Gate is the heart of New Delhi — a 42-meter-high war memorial arch standing at the eastern end of the ceremonial Rajpath (now Kartavya Path). Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and completed in 1931, it commemorates the 70,000 Indian soldiers who died in World War I and the Third Anglo-Afghan War. The names of over 13,000 soldiers are inscribed on its surface. After dark, the illuminated arch surrounded by manicured lawns becomes one of Delhi's most popular gathering spots. The recently redeveloped Central Vista promenade now features stunning landscaped gardens, food stalls, and a new underground museum. From India Gate, you can see the Rashtrapati Bhavan (Presidential Palace) at the other end of Kartavya Path, one of Delhi's most iconic vistas.
